MISA meeting - Friday 29 th July 2005
The group of MI trainers and researchers in Cape Town will meet on Friday 29th July 2005 14h00-16h30 to practice skills in use and training of MI.

John Martin - Visiting trainer and researcher in MI - July - August 2005
"John Martin PhD is Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University and a faculty member of the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology since 1986. He has conducted motivational interviewing training since 1996 with his doctoral psychology students as well as for therapists, social workers, nurses, community action workers, addictions counselors and probation officers in both California and South Africa. Dr Martin’s research and publications have focused on the behavioral and health aspects of smoking treatment in recovering alcoholics, diet, exercise, medical compliance, high-risk drinking and drug use in college students and spiritual and behavioural approaches to change." He is in South Africa until the end of August helping with the Infant Feeding Research Project.

International Training of New Trainers in MI (TNT) 2006
This international training event will be held outside of Europe and the USA for the first time in 2006. The provisional dates are for the practitioners workshop 11-12 September 2006 and the TNT itself 13-15 September. Places are limited to 40 people in each event on a first come first served basis. The main trainer will be Dr Steve Rollnick. The venue is the Lanzerac Estate in Stellenbosch which has both accommodation and a conference venue.

Infant Feeding Research Project - news July and August
The project has developed a training manual for the training of nurse and lay counselors in MI and woman-centredness. Initial training has been conducted in Stellenbosch (W. Cape), Eshowe (Kwa-Zulu Natal), Mbabane ( Swaziland) and Oshakati ( Namibia). Over the next 6-months the groups of counselors will participate in an action research to assess how well these skills can be intergrated into the PMTCT programme.

Training in the use of The Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) Code: Version 2.0
Visiting professor John Martin will train researchers in the use of this tool for assessing audio or video tapes of MI on Thursday 25 th August at Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg Campus, Cape Town.
